Mission: Future of Korea

A Missiological View on Reunification of Korea:

Why do we call it ¡°A Frontier in Mission¡±?

Deborah Meung1

Introductory

For most Koreans, the land beyond DMZ sounds very strange and do not feel the need to stay informed, or interested. The land is not just forbidden but it has been out of boundaries for too many years for the contemporary Koreans to fathom the meaning and significance of reunification. Perhaps the politicians and the militia have a grasp of the Koreas current state, however the average Korean people in their 40s and below stay ignorant. It is only to those who had been alive to see and taste the bitterness of war and division that reunification becomes a tangible matter, a reality.

The Koreans can stay so ignorant at home where its brother land is just a fence away, while the Korean immigrants are informed and can even visit North Korea either as a tourist or with an invitation. It is indeed ironic how the Koreans are one people yet have such differing world views just as the Christians and Muslims clash yet they share the same identity as Indonesians. Comparing the two countries, Indonesia holds far more Christians than Korea but at the same time has the highest Muslim population in the world. On Sundays while the Christians go to church and worship in bahasa Indonesian, the Muslims would recite their sholat (prayers) in Arabic at a mosque. This is the same irony that exists in the Indonesian society today. The state of the religious division in Indonesia is evident when looking at an incident that took place just a few months ago. The Indonesian court of justice sentenced a Kyai (religious leader) to four years in prison for reciting the sholat in bahasa Indonesian in the same way they sentenced brother S for praying in the name of Isa Al Masih2, one of the five profits of Islam. Over sixty days has passed since brother S¡¯ sentence now that today is January twenty fifth, 2006. He is still waiting for his trial.

North Korea, branded as the abstract world of unknown lie just over our heads, almost close enough to touch but too far to comprehend. It is like the majority of Koreans today ministering blind folded within a structured dome acting out the costumes they have grown used to without realizing the importance of the inevitable reunification that is soon to come. That is why there is a need for a revival in our mission history today and the spiritual leaders of the church and missions to understand the importance of reunification will with no doubt add to the understanding of Korean frontier missions. It is important for the Korean missions to know why reunification must happen and what affect it is going to have in a mission¡¯s perspective. However we are faced with the fact that the issue of reunification comes side by side with politics and therefore, most people are passive to this matter. All the more this is a reason why they are reluctant to understand the role of the church in such a busy world as today.

The reunification of Korea holds great potentials to significantly change the mission playing field across the world, and therefore it is believed to be one of the top priorities in frontier missions. The conflicting views on terror and jihad within the Islamic society have been one of the hottest controversies even to this day. It is time when instead of terror, missionaries and fellow believers should discuss and reflect on how they ministered in the middle east, south east Asia and all the Islamic countries across the world.

Unification of a nation and an alliance with Islam

The unification of the Koreas means not only liberty for North Korea, but it is the beginning of a new church history. No one knows how long the transitioning period will take, but there is one thing for certain and that is the clash between cultures and world view will be inevitable as it was with East and West Germany.

Once the Koreas are one, the land will prove itself a useful bridge to Central Asia, which will lead to Europe and the Middle East. It is the opening of the Silk Road; with it Korea will stand in a geographically important position for the diplomacy of cultures. The path to the north will lead to Russia, China and Central Asia where many Muslims reside and will also give easier access to Europe and Middle East by land as well as sea.

In year 2005 the King of Jordan held a summit with leaders of Islamic nations in order to address religious controversies such as identity as an Islam and the problems of jihad within their fundamental sects (which also included terrorism). The leaders came to an agreement on educating Indonesia¡¯s religious kyais to equip them with the right knowledge of terrorism and jihad as the world¡¯s largest Muslim nation. Hikmat Sanusi3 (Reclaiming Jihad¡¯s True Meaning) states, ¡°Reclaiming the concept of Jihad has much to do with the absorption of the teachings of the Koran and Hadith, so perhaps what is needed now is for Muslim intellectuals to regain control of the discourse of Islam, removing misleading interpretations of its texts. Given the complexity of their mission, it could take several years to arrive at a clear understanding of the concept of jihad, which has been drummed into the beliefs of the more than 190 million Muslims across this nation¡±

Islamic intellectuals voice the need to reform the corruption of the ¡°holy jihad¡± which has been encouraging mass murder of countless people over the years with the excuse of claiming that one is chosen from above. Muslim intellectuals are not only aware, but ashamed of innocent civilians being sacrificed by extremists who profess to be under the ¡°holy jihad¡± in this global and fast paced world. By means to accentuate a wholesome Islamic image, the delegates of 57 Islamic nations held a conference, O.I.C (Organization of the Islamic Conference),4 in December of 2005 at Mecca. In consequence the ¡°Declaration of Mecca¡± was formulated which included documents of Muslim intellectuals such as ¡°The basic essence and vision of a sound Islam¡± and ¡°Challenges Muslims face in the 21st century¡±. Various sects within Islam are struggling with incompatible concepts of awakening, however they all agree on the need to awaken Muslims relying on Islamic powers and politicians who do not study their scriptures (Al Qur¡¯an) and know the true nature of Islam. Despite the continuing practice of terrorism, Muslims are keeping up a persistent research on how to survive the international community and will look to more realistic ways of co-existing with the rest of the world. Soon, no one will approve of a religion that encourages terror, and various organizations across the world will place a regulation on any religion, society or nation that goes against human rights. There is much anticipation on the Korean Peninsula to be an important tool for equipping the intellectual Muslims in search of sound doctrine in the 21st century. The bridge must be laid out for Muslims who seeks truth in prayer and make known to them that Isa Al Masih is the only way, the true sound doctrine they had been seeking for.5

Reality of Korean Mission Paradigm - Understanding Frontier Spirit

Many pastors, missionaries and seminary students will have a reality check on what they have been called to do once the Koreas are united. This is not a new concept, therefore there will no longer be students applying for Bible Colleges without a true calling. All the more, the people called to do God¡¯s work will be able to minister wherever and whatever God has called them to do in willing submission and joy. Instead of the conservative perception of pastoring or missions, tent making believers and missionaries must escalade. This will lead to the inevitable reality of the importance of a professional identity. People will soon realize the significance of Central Asia, the land they had been so indifferent of. Political and economical alliances will form and the unknown land will no longer be unknown, but our neighbors. Keeping this in mind, the missions¡¯ insider and outsider movement must be analyzed in light of Korea¡¯s unification and plan ahead for what needs to be done.

Awareness from Inside Out - Basic understanding of the church and missions

The insider movement is what the Korean church and believers must prepare for. In fact, this is the time for a retrial and shift in mission paradigm and the church must recover through spiritual training and start over from the fundamentals, as that of churches described in Acts.

As an outsider¡¯s point of view (not residing in Korea), the problems of the Korean church must be left in the hands of insiders and therefore this issue must be taken care of by the Korean Pastors and leaders. The need to bring up the issue of church revival and union is unnecessary in this context.

In light of the reunification of the Korean peninsula, the importance of mission paradigm check and retrial cannot be stressed more. In fact, it is required. If the church still requires the traditional form of missions even in an un-reached and an innovative area, missionaries have no choice but to conform to the ¡°mission custom¡± in order to maintain church support. Ministering in ways not appropriate within the context of that certain area will not only bare little fruit but will be a waste to mission funds. No one wants the funds they had given to support missionaries to go to waste, but at the same time when the church encourages the traditional mission paradigm, it is the very problem to unrealistic missions and an interference of effectively proclaiming the gospel. In this kind of system, faculties are chosen among missionaries and within their subculture they must be equipped with the right language, culture and worldview enough to be acknowledged as an insider. If a missionary going out to an Islamic nation were to write a prayer letter or start a project on Bible Campus ministry or Church Planting for the sake of Muslims, they are prone to become the primary target of hostility, therefore this is not a realistic mission approach towards Muslims. Suggesting relocation of missionaries or a mission organization is merely a reflection of this truth.

Awareness from Outside In - The changing world and its history

The concern for the secular political system and globalization of today¡¯s world falls into this category. Preparing against heresy (false Christian sects) and eradicating heathenism and shamanistic practices are also included.

The secular world generally sees politics as something only politicians deal with. However, the popular view that average Christians do not participate in ¡°dirty¡± politics must be cast off. God is able and can work within political realms to profess his power. This is a new field in which youth called by God must prepare themselves for and reform the traditional standard for politics.

Gun-Hyun Lee¡¯s (professor of Seoul National University) lecture, ¡°Change Korea¡¯s foreign policy paradigm¡±6 relating to the globalization of the world and Korea¡¯s topology, states that territorial barriers can be minimized by soft power resources7 and stresses the importance of infrastructural development for international alliances. As a single missionary ministering overseas, the fact that the statement above seems superior to the present political paradigm of the government cannot be overlooked.

The countries surrounding the peninsula as we know are China, Russia and Japan, which plays an important role in this global world. When God¡¯s will (to spread the gospel throughout the nations) is accompanied by mature secular politics in the global field, there will be an acceleration of spreading the gospel with easier access to the neighboring countries allowing believers to minister in all corners of Central Asia, Russian, China and Japan. This is the spiritual battle field in which the believers must prepare themselves for. If we as believers do not feel the need to reach out to the Muslims whom God had not forgotten, then it must be concluded that it is indeed non-biblical for we would be allowing ourselves to stay indifferent towards the countries abridged by the open peninsula.

Perhaps reunification is not plausible in God¡¯s sovereign perspective due to our lack of preparation. It is only when we are prepared with true calling for the church and for this era that Koreas can be reunited peacefully with minimum conflict and it is then that we are able to become influential, mature citizens of God with access to all corners of the world.

The most problematic heresy of all is the cult of the Unified Church (FFUW: The Family Federation for Unification and World Peace). To rid of heathenism and shamanistic practices is just as hard as reforming the Korean churches through awakening revivals. When the church is able to stand in truth, people will no longer be blinded by vague concepts. The need to go through purity and holiness revival is important in the time of unification, but in reality people will focus more on strengthening of the church and take Bible Colleges more seriously. The fundamentals of Christianity and what it means to be in Christ will once again be taken note of. The power of purity and the spiritual renewal of the church and the believers cannot be overlooked for it is an important component in fighting heretical sects. It is only then Shamanism and the FFUW will be able to stay behind the scenes as a minority.

The main concern is the FFUW which is recognized as the largest heretical cult. The FFUW and their partnership with the world religion peace pact is a stronghold for the believers to overcome. We cannot deny their increasing role in globalization and the world. The FFUW¡¯s schemes are unknown and vague, yet there are rumors of establishment of various centers and organizations at border areas for her members to research and study. It is no surprise to see that Sun-Meung Moon and a few other important delegates of the sect to have already advanced in visiting North Korea in light of the future reunification.

In Conclusion

At such a time as this Protestants and missionaries can only save funds for North Korean ministries and wait for the long waited reunification or serve under the lack of funds and strategy living an isolated missionary¡¯s life in North Korea. One may be equipped emotionally and feel driven enough to minister at such a country, however realistic, strategic preparation under research is still lacking. It can only be seen as the absence of a pragmatic strategy. The process and the consequences of reunification will reveal for itself the potential to reach Islamic nations across the continents and to see a reformed mission paradigm at work through spiritual and territorial constituents. When God makes known to us the urgency to prepare for this type of ministry, externally, a network will develop among the Diaspora Korean believers across the nations and internally the global proliferation of the gospel will take place through the church. If we were to take part in missing God¡¯s time of Kairos, this will be a terrible mistake to make in the history of God¡¯s Kingdom. This is not a mere conceptualization, but a stepping stone in achieving God¡¯s purposes through reunification and future frontier missions. *

4 The organization, founded in 1969, is currently facing a financial crisis as several member states have not paid their annual contributions.

5 Muslims have been instructed to read the Injil (the gospel, what we know as the Gospel), yet Islamic leaders purposely avoid the original script for political reasons and do not teach it for the sake of refusing the divine nature of Isa Al Masih (Jesus) and emphasizing the concept of One God, God the father. There have been various exciting incidents of Muslims coming back to Christ after having read the Injil.

7 According to the government, soft power (good diplomatic relations by promoting the country in favorable ways) is just as important as hard power (military and economic power). Between the democratic powers of the world, they use negotiation and consultation instead of military power to resolve conflicts.
