성탄절이 다가오면 경쾌한 캐롤송이 거리마다 넘쳐흐르고 TV에선 연이어서 특집방송을 방영한다. 온 나라가 온통 축제 분위가로 술렁대는 것이다. 아직 짝을 찾지 못한 젊은이들은 가슴을 설레며 이 날을 기다린다. 왠지 누군가를 이 크리스마스 시즌에 운명적으로 만날 것 같다는 예감을 가지기도 한다. 이러한 현상은 기독교인이거나 비기독교인이거나 간에 매 일반이다. 그러나 사실 지금의 성탄절 모습은 성탄절 본래의 의미에서 많이 벗어나 있다. 성탄절의 본래 의미는 예수님이 태어나신 사실을 되새기며 기뻐하는 데 있다. 예수님께서 우리를 치유하러 이 땅에 친히 와 주셨기 때문이다.
예수를 만나 죽음의 병에서 새 삶을 얻게 된 한 형제의 간증이다. 그는 별 어려움 없이 어린 시절을 보냈다. 그런데 그의 누이에게 온 몸의 근육이 무력해지는 증상이 시작되면서 그의 불행도 시작되었다. 신체의 근육이 기능을 상실하면서 서서히 죽어가는 불치병에 걸린 누이가 거동을 못하게 되었을 때쯤 그도 이 희귀한 병에 걸렸다. 그는 곧 화장실도 혼자 다닐 수 없을 정도가 되었다.
불행은 외발로 오지 않는다는 말이 있다. 팔팔하게 돌아다녀야 할 젊은 자식들이 불치병으로 퍽퍽 쓰러지자 그의 어머니가 속병을 얻어 먼저 저 세상으로 가 버리고 말았다. 이제 그들을 지켜줄 사람은 지치고 노쇠한 그의 아버지 한 사람뿐이었다.
그 무렵 간혹 교인들이 찾아와서 복음을 전하고 갔다. 그러나 절망의 수렁에 빠진 그들에게 그것이 위로가 될 리 없었다. 건강은 점점 악화되어 숨을 내쉬는 젓조차도 힘들게 되었다. 이제는 죽는 일밖에 남지 않은 것 같았다.
모든 것을 다 포기해 버린 순간 그에게 문득 세 사람의 얼굴이 떠올랐다. 그들은 모두 신앙인이었다. 그중에서 제일 또렷이 기억되는 사람은 주일학교 시절의 교사였던 한 장로님이었다. 그리고 그분이 주일학교에서 한 설교의 한 구절이 떠올랐다.
“예수님은 오늘도 어린 양 한 마리를 찾아다니고 계신단다.”
그 장로님의 음성이 그의 귀에 선명히 되살아나는 순간, 그는 자신이 예수님께서 애타게 찾으시는 어린 양이라는 생각이 들었다. 예수님께 나를 내어 맡긴다면? 비록 성할 때 주님을 영접하지는 못했지만... 비록 입술을 열 수 있을 때 그의 이름을 불러보지는 못했지만... 이제라도 하나님은 기꺼이 사랑으로 자기를 받아줄 것만 같았다. 그는 마음속으로 간절히 기도했다.
“하나님, 내 영혼을 받아주옵소서”
그가 간절한 마음으로 기도를 드리고 나서 눈을 뜨자 온 방안이 무엇인가로 가득 찬 느낌이 들었다. 그 순간 놀라운 어떤 힘이 그를 일으키고 있는 것을 느꼈다. 그는 서서히 움직이기 시작했다. 예수님께서 그에게 손을 내밀어 일으켜 주셨던 것이다.
예수님은 병들어 온전한 삶을 살아가지 못하는 사람들을 치유하러 이 땅에 친히 오셨다. 마음이 병든 사람과 영혼이 썩어 가는 가람들을 구원하러 오신 것이다.
세례 요한은 감옥에서 예수님께 그의 제자들을 보내어 물었다.
“오신다는 그분이 당신이십니까? 그렇지 않으면 우리가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?”
“가서 너희가 듣고 본 것을 알려라. 눈먼 사람이 눈을 뜨고 저는 사람이 걷고, 나병환자가 깨끗해지고, 귀먹은 사람이 듣고, 죽은 사람이 살아나고, 가난힌 사람이 복음을 듣는다 하라.”
4복음서는 대부분 예수님의 치유의 사건을 기록하고 있다. 예수님의 치유의 사건은 오늘 우리의 현실 한가운데서도 계속 일어나고 있다. 그런데 많은 사람들이 치유받아야 할 아픔을 지니고 있으면서도 자신의 병을 잘 모르는 채로 살아간다. 생명력이 넘치고 기쁘고 감사한 마음을 갖지 못하고 좌절 속에서 헤어나지 못한다. 이유 없는 짜증과 분노의 감정에 사로잡혀서 외로움과 무기력에서 벗어나지 못한다. 우리의 영적 상태가 병들어 있기 때문이다.
아무도 스스로를 완전히 건강한 사람이라고 단언할 수는 없다. 애석하게도 우리들 대부분은 치유받아야 할 사람들이기 때문이다. 나는 한때 내 자신을 치유 받지 않아도 될 사람이라고 착각한 적이 있었다.
그러나 치유란 꼭 육체가 성하게 됨을 뜻하는 것은 아니다. 오히려 육신의 질고를 통해서 더욱 더 큰 하나님의 영광을 나타낼 수도 있다. 전신 불구이면서도 인류에게 큰 빛을 던져 주었던 헬렌 켈러나, 불구의 몸을 이끌고 전세계에 민족 자존의 횃불을 던져 주었던 루즈벨트처럼 성한 사람보다도 훨씬 더 큰 일을 할 수 있도록 하나님께서 역사하시기 바란다.
As Christmas season draws near joyful Christmas carols echo in the streets, and television features various Christmas specials. The whole country is bombarded with a festive mood. Young people look for partners to escort them to parties, and they even dream of meeting a special sweetheart. The celebrative mood is a common phenomenon among Christians as well as non-Christians. But today's Christmas celebration is far removed from the original meaning. The true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate and to rejoice in the birth of Jesus because He came into the world to heal us.
A man who was healed from a terminal sickness had enjoyed a normal childhood. But his sister began to lose the use of her muscles and he soon suffered the same problem also. Neither of them could use their muscles and were slowly dying from an incurable disease. He no longer could even go to bathroom alone. Misfortune often comes in pairs. As the children, who should have been active, lay dying, the mother got sick and died ahead of them. Now only the old father was left to take care of them.
Christians came to visit occasionally and told them about Jesus. However, the family could not be consoled. Even breathing was a struggle. Death seemed to be the only outcome. When all hope was gone, he remembered a Sunday School teacher who had taught, "Jesus is looking for one lost sheep even today." As the dying man could hear his Sunday School teacher's voice clearly, he realized that Jesus was looking for him, a lost sheep. He thought, "What if I surrender to Jesus? Even though I did not accept Jesus before I was sick, nor did I call on His name when I could. . . . I hope that Jesus will forgive and accept me now.? He earnestly prayed, "God, receive my spirit." As he opened his eyes after the prayer, the room was full of God's presence. He felt an amazing power was lifting him up. He began to move slowly. He felt Jesus holding him by the hand and raising him up. He was able to walk. Jesus healed him. Jesus came to heal those who are sick in body, heart, and soul and who cannot lead a normal life. He came to save those who are sick. "Are you the one who was to come or should we expect someone else? John's disciples asked. Jesus answered, ?Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor."
The first four books of the New Testament are mostly about the healing ministry of Jesus. Jesus still heals today. Many need healing but go on living unaware of their diseases. Many live in despair without gratitude and purpose in life. Unhappiness and anger without cause, loneliness and inertia envelope them because their soul is sick. No one, even the seemingly healthy, can claim he or she has perfect health. Most of us need healing. Nevertheless, I once thought I needed no healing.
I came to realize that people have psychological and spiritual problems to one degree or another. That is why we cannot reject the healing hand of Jesus. The glory of God can be manifested through physical sickness. It is our desire that God would do a greater work through us normal people than Helen Keller accomplished in spite of her multiple handicaps and than Teddy Roosevelt accomplished in a wheelchair. The indominable spirit of such people is an example to the whole world. May our lives demonstrate that Jesus Came to heal both our spirits and our bodies.
